چکیده

This chapter proposes an enhancement to currently used algorithms for 7 monitoring daily counts of pre-diagnostic data. Rather than use a single algo8 rithm or apply multiple algorithms simultaneously, our approach is based on 9 ensembles of algorithms. The ensembles lead to better performance in terms 10 of higher true alert rates for a given false alert rate. Combinations can be 11 employed at the data preprocessing step and/or at the monitoring step. We 12 discuss the advantages of such an approach and illustrate its usefulness using 13 authentic modern biosurveillance data. 14

Toward Integrated DoD Biosurveillance: Assessment and Opportunities.

In the context of the 2012 National Strategy for Biosurveillance, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) asked the Department of Defense (DoD) to review its biosurveillance programs, prioritize missions and desired outcomes, evaluate how DoD programs contribute to these, and assess the appropriateness and stability of the department's funding system for biosurveillance. DoD sought external a...

Factors Influencing Performance of Internet-Based Biosurveillance Systems Used in Epidemic Intelligence for Early Detection of Infectious Diseases Outbreaks

BACKGROUND Internet-based biosurveillance systems have been developed to detect health threats using information available on the Internet, but system performance has not been assessed relative to end-user needs and perspectives. METHOD AND FINDINGS Infectious disease events from the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) weekly international epidemiological bulletin published...

Quantifying the determinants of outbreak detection performance through simulation and machine learning

OBJECTIVE To develop a probabilistic model for discovering and quantifying determinants of outbreak detection and to use the model to predict detection performance for new outbreaks. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used an existing software platform to simulate waterborne disease outbreaks of varying duration and magnitude. The simulated data were overlaid on real data from visits to emergency depar...

Internet-based biosurveillance methods for vector-borne diseases: Are they novel public health tools or just novelties?

Internet-based surveillance methods for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) using "big data" sources such as Google, Twitter, and internet newswire scraping have recently been developed, yet reviews on such "digital disease detection" methods have focused on respiratory pathogens, particularly in high-income regions. Here, we present a narrative review of the literature that has examined the performan...
